Mahoning commissioners set public hearings for sales-tax proposal

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County commissioners this morning scheduled two public hearings concerning a sales-tax proposal that would be placed on the Nov. 4 ballot.

The first hearing will be at 5:30 p.m. June 26 at the Covelli Center, 229 E. Front St., downtown Youngstown, and the second hearing will be at 6 p.m. June 30 at McMahon Hall at the Mahoning County Experimental Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road (state Route 46) in Canfield.

Voters defeated the continuous renewal of a half-percent sales tax in the May primary.

Commissioners also approved two road closings that will begin this month.

Lake Park Boulevard between Bandy and Oyster roads in Smith Township will close for about 60 days beginning Monday for painting and rehabilitation of a bridge that carries the boulevard over the Mahoning River.

The intersection of Mathews and Sheridan roads in Boardman will close for about 45 days beginning June 16 for installation of a traffic circle, known as a roundabout.

When the one-lane roundabout, designed to improve traffic flow and safety, is completed, the intersection will have no traffic lights or stop signs. The intersection now has a traffic light.
