Rotary hosts conference and earns awards

YOUNGSTOWN

The Rotary Club of Youngstown hosted its annual District 6650 conference in early May with 47 clubs and almost 250 Rotarians attending.

The event, “A Taste of Youngstown,” helped visitors experience area venues including Fellows Riverside Gardens at Mill Creek Park, the OH WOW! Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology, Youngstown State University and the Butler Institute of American Art.

Youngstown Rotarians received many awards during the event. Rotarian International President Ron Burton presented the club with the Rotary International Presidential Citation with Distinction, and he presented the Ursuline Interact Club with the R.I. Presidential Citation.

The club also was recognized for its commitment and pledge to End Polio Now campaign; the Robert Manchester Award for best vocational project in the district, Rockin’ Race for Cancer; and the Roland Luhman Award for best community project in the district, Operation Warm.

The club received runner-up awards for the Jack Maxwell Award for best club bulletin in the district, the Jack Vogel Award for best public relations and the Emmett Riley Award for best literacy project, Holiday Book Distribution at Harding Elementary School.

Other recognitions were the induction of Scott Schulick, president, into the Paul Harris Society; Carol Sherman for best tasting cookie dough strudel; and Rich Esbenshade for best looking chocolate Oreo truffle in the cookie table competition. District Governor Debbie Esbenshade was awarded a pin for her service as past district governor.
