The estate of Alice Resch Powers, who died Sept. 26 at the age of 81, is left to an educational trust that will benefit seven colleges and universities, including Youngstown State University.

The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown adopts interim guidelines for families requesting permission to cremate deceased family members. Bishop James W. Malone says fewer than 6 percent of Catholic funerals involve cremation.

1964: Glenn Elder, 54, of Austintown is killed at the Republic Steel Corp. plant on Poland Avenue when spraying acid led to a 10-foot fall in which he fractured his skull.

The Mahoning County grand jury is dropping its investigation of organized-crime activities but recommends strongly that the probe be pursued at a later date.

Joe Hoza, 62, of Rigby Street, is charged with manslaughter in the death of Hilda Martin, 16, who died when Hoza fired into a truckload of people at his service station after an argument over payment for two gallons of gasoline.
