Twirling teams perform final recital

Northern Strut Twirling Teams performed its final recital May 18 after 19 years as a recreational and competitive twirling group.
Jessica Yozwiak, fourth-year feature twirler for Thiel College; Monica Matiussi, first-year feature twirler for Walsh College; and Madeline Crish, first-year majorette for the University of Mount Union, earned positions in their respective collegiate bands.
Yozwiak competed in the Marching Auxiliaries National Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, where she earned the National Champion title in the solo twirling high-school-plus division.
Director Janet Gbur is retiring after 19 years of directing Northern Strut Twirling Teams.
She is working toward her doctorate in materials science and engineering from Case Western Reserve University.
She earned bachelor’s degrees in biology-pre-medicine from Kent State University and materials engineering from Youngstown State University and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from YSU.
Team members have been referred to the Twirling Angels at the Buhl Community Recreation Center in Sharon, Pa. Missy Cobert is its director. Beth Braal of Canton will provide private instruction.
