Trolley in Salem takes riders on trip to past
Staff report
SALEM
The Salem Historical Society, during the summer and fall months, will offer tours on the Quakertown Trolley. The first for the season will take place during Salem’s Super Nats weekend at 1:30 p.m. June 22.
A docent, dressed as a Salem Quaker, will take passengers back in time to the year 1856. Following the sharing of many stories, the travelers will return to the 21st century with a better understanding of the plight of slaves, the working of the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist movement that flourished in Salem prior to the Civil War.
Since the homes are private and entrances not possible, flashed on a screen inside the trolley will be more than 100 slides to show pictures of the insides of the homes, the Underground Railroad hiding places, and several abolitionists.
The slides will also help clarify the historical information presented during the program. The tour will last approximately 75 minutes. Cost is $10 a person, and a minimum of 15 are necessary to conduct the tour. For reservations, call, 330-337-6733.
