Dog shot

A dog that was found shot on the East Side Friday afternoon and taken to the Mahoning County Dog Pound is expected to be released to a rescue organization.

Rick Tunison, the dog pound’s kennel supervisor and veterinary technician, said Sunday the dog is doing well. He had been shot twice in the shoulder, and an older wound shattered multiple bones in his left front foot.

He also has massive scarring on his head, likely from fights with other dogs.

The young boxer-lab mix received care at a Boardman veterinarian Friday and stayed the night there before returning to the pound Saturday.

The dog, which his rescuers are calling Rusty, is recuperating with a bed, central air and lots of attention in Tunison’s office, he said.

The Akron shelter One of a Kind Pet rescue is expected to take him in Tuesday.

Tunison said the pound had been getting calls about Rusty, and a deputy dog warden went out around 1:30 p.m. Friday. There were reports he was hard to approach, but that turned out not to be true.

“He climbs right up on your lap and licks you, — after all he’s been through, Tunison said.

He added that there are no leads on who shot Rusty.
