Federer loses to Gulbis in French 4th round

One point from a two-set lead Sunday in the French Open’s fourth round against 18th-seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, Roger Federer settled under a floating ball and prepared for what should have been a simple putaway. Except, suddenly, it wasn’t. Federer sent a meek overhead toward Gulbis, who took advantage of the gaffe, ripping a backhand winner. That was part of a four-point run that let Gulbis break serve and get very much back into the match, which he wound up winning 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to end Federer’s streak of nine consecutive quarterfinals at Roland Garros.

Gulbis now plays No. 6 Tomas Berdych, who eliminated the last American man, No. 10 John Isner. In another quarterfinal, No. 2 Novak Djokovic will face No. 8 Milos Raonic. Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and No. 24 Fernando Verdasco finished off third-round victories in matches suspended Saturday night.

In the women’s quarterfinals, 2012 champion Maria Sharapova — who won the last nine games against Samantha Stosur on Sunday — will face 35th-ranked Garbine Muguruza, the 20-year-old Spaniard who stunned Serena Williams last week.

Castroneves wins 2nd Detroit race of weekend

DETROIT

Helio Castroneves easily won the second Detroit Grand Prix race of the weekend Sunday, finishing 1.6836 seconds ahead of Penske Racing teammate Will Power, who won Saturday’s race. Castroneves’ lead was so large that when he made his final pit stop on Lap 49 he still was ahead when he got back on the track. The competition got closer after cautions led to restarts with seven and three laps left, but Castroneves could not be caught.

Shoprite win vaults Lewis into top spot

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J.

Stacy Lewis won the ShopRite LPGA Classic to take the top spot in the world ranking from Inbee Park, finishing with a 4-under 67 for a six-stroke victory. No. 1 for four weeks early last year, Lewis ended Park’s 59-week run in the top spot. Lewis finished at 16-under 197 on Seaview’s Bay Course and earned $225,000 for her second victory of the year.

Pernice wins Principal Charity Classic

DES MOINES, Iowa

For the second time in less than a year, Tom Pernice Jr. hit a crucial shot on the 17th hole on his way to a victory. This time, Pernice needed one more big shot to secure the win. Pernice birdied the second hole of a sudden-death playoff with Doug Garwood on Sunday to win the Champions Tour’s Principal Charity Classic. Pernice won for the third time on the 50-and-over tour, closing with a 3-under 69 to match Garwood at 12-under 204 at Wakonda Club.

Alabama, Florida meet in softball title series

OKLAHOMA CITY

Jackie Traina threw a four-hitter to help Alabama beat Oregon 2-0 on Sunday and advance to the best-of-three Women’s College World Series championship series beginning tonight against Southeastern Conference rival Florida which defeated Baylor 6-3 in the other CWS bracket final.
