YSU athletes set academic records

YOUNGSTOWN

On the heels of many outstanding athletic performances this spring, the Youngstown State athletic department announced that Penguin student-athletes set all-time highs for cumulative GPA and semester grade-point average performances of 3.00 or higher. Upon completion of the spring semester, YSU had an all-time high with a 3.17 cumulative grade-point average. Out of 331 student-athletes, an all-time best 201 (61 percent) had a grade-point average of better than 3.00 in the spring. Of those 201 student-athletes, 186 now maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.

The cumulative 3.17 GPA for the spring, eclipsed the previous high of 3.09 which came last spring. YSU student-athletes had a 3.07 GPA in the fall, which set a school record for that term. Coming off a fall semester in which 47 student-athletes had a perfect 4.00 GPA, 44 posted a spotless GPA in the spring. Of those 44, 16 have a cumulative 4.00 GPA during their academic careers.

Settlement would pay players for image use

A $40 million settlement has been completed that will pay college football and basketball players dating to 2003 for the use of their likenesses in NCAA-branded videogames. The payouts could go to more than 100,000 athletes, including some current players, who were either on college rosters or had their images used in videogames made by Electronic Arts featuring college teams. Depending on how many athletes apply for the settlement, the payments could range from as little as $48 for each year an athlete was on a roster to $951 for each year the image of an athlete was used in a videogame.

The settlement is with Electronic Arts and Collegiate Licensing Co., which licenses and markets college sports, and does not include the NCAA. The case against the NCAA is scheduled for trial early next year.

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken still must approve the proposed settlement, which comes on the eve of a major antitrust trial against the NCAA that could reshape the way college sports operate. That case, featuring former UCLA basketball star Ed O’Bannon and others as lead plaintiffs, goes to trial June 9 in Oakland, Calif.

Canadiens’ Price says he doesn’t need surgery

BROSSARD, Quebec

Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price said Saturday that he doesn’t need surgery for the lower-body injury he sustained in the Eastern Conference finals. Price’s playoffs ended in the second period of the series opener after New York Rangers forward Chris Krieder crashed into him while on a breakaway. Price would only call it a lower-body injury, although he was wearing a brace on his right knee in the days after the injury.
