Upstate Shredding receives an award

NEW YORK

New York-based scrap-metal recycler Upstate Shredding — Weitsmann Recycling was named the world’s leader in scrap and recycling by Platts, a premier international publication in recycling.

The company has a location in New Castle, Pa.

Upstate Shredding officials accepted the award at a ceremony May 21 in London.

Upstate Shredding was one of five finalists for the Platts “Industry Leadership — Scrap & Recycling” award for 2014. The annual gala black-tie event “is a competitive awards program honoring excellence and accomplishments in the global metals industry,” according to the Platts website. Upstate Shredding is the East Coast’s largest privately held scrap-metal processor. The company has 18 locations throughout New York and Pennsylvania and is home to one of the most- powerful mega-shredders in the world.

The company’s New Castle location is not yet constructed on South Jefferson Street. It is expected to be completed by next year and will bring approximately 30 jobs to the area.

YSU plans annual energy forum

YOUNGSTOWN

The sixth annual Youngstown State University Sustainable Energy Forum: Energy and Innovative Manufacturing will be Monday and Tuesday.

The forum begins at 7:30 a.m. with continental breakfast in Kilcawley Center and ends after a reception at 4 p.m. Monday. Lunch also will be provided. Lunch will close the second day of the forum.

Topics at the forum include 3-D printing, additive manufacturing, research exchange and opportunities in natural gas. There also will be a NASA panel discussion Monday.

The forum is open to the public for $25, and students can attend for free.

EPA awards funds to assess brownfields

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, announced $400,000 in new federal funds to support environmental brownfield site assessments in Columbiana County.

The funds were awarded to Salem by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The EPA’s Brownfields ARC program funds the assessment and cleanup of the contaminated land of former industrial and commercial properties. This redevelopment creates jobs and protects Ohioans’ health and the environment.

Chipotle will join HandsOn fundraiser

BOARDMAN

The HandsOn Volunteer Network will have a fundraiser at Chipotle Mexican Grill on U.S. Route 224 in Boardman from 4 to 8 p.m. June 11.

Chipotle is donating 50 percent of its profit made in that time frame to the nonprofit.

To participate, tell the cashier about the fundraiser.
