To kick off the summer season, Smith Corners Church hosted the first of three Family Fun Nights on June 27.

The other dates include July 25 and Aug. 22. The church will also host its Vacation Bible School from Aug. 11-15.

“We’ve just been thinking about ways we can reach out to our community and summer time’s a time when a lot of kids have a lot of time on their hands,” Pastor Marilyn Coney said. “We thought we would try to do a monthly ministry to minister to families and children, so we thought this would be a good idea.”

Coney said she expected 100 or more people to attend.

Among the activities were bounce arounds, a tug of war, cornhole, water balloon games and an appearance by the praise band Firmly Grounded of Howland United Methodist Church. There were also hot dogs, chips and drinks.

Lillian Lelesh is a lifelong member of Smith Corners Church. She is originally from Austintown but now lives in Cortland.

“I’ve been at Smith Corners all my life,” she said. “You kind of have to do something during the summer and this is a great way to do it.”

Lelesh was asked which activities she was looking forward to the most.

“Mostly eating and probably play some games and hang out with some of the younger kids,” she said.

Coney said the event would be a safe one for people of all ages.

“It’ll be good Christian fellowship,” she said. “There’ll be safe activities for the children and for families and a nice atmosphere. They’ll get to meet their neighbors.”
