Boardman Park hosts Senior Fun Day

With a lot of seniors lacking activities, Boardman Park has been hosting Senior Fun Days at the Lariccia Family Communuty Center for more than a decade to help keep them occupied. The latest Senior Fun Day was on June 26.
“We’ve been doing this for 11 years now,” Boardman Park recreation director Karen McCallum said. “It’s in partnership with Senior Independence, Sunrise Assisted Living, Sateri Homes and the Blackburn Home. They all help make these days possible.”
The events are hosted twice a month, on the third and fourth Thursdays of each month.
“You can only come to one or the other since we have so many seniors that come to the event,” McCallum said.
The activities vary. The June 26 fun day events consisted of blood pressure screenings, exercises, crafts, lunch consisting of Isaly’s chip chop ham and barbecue sauce, and bingo. The cost is $1 for all area seniors.
“It’s a great opportunity to socialize with others,” McCallum said. “Just like we encourage kids to, socializing and get involved. It’s a great way to stay active and socialize with their friends on a monthly basis.”
McCallum said each fun day attracts approximately 70 seniors.
Each funday also has a guest speaker. The speaker on June 26 was Aileena Bender of the Area Agency on Aging, who spoke about hospice care and end of life care, and how people can volunteer and help out with Hospice House.
Chris Anderson of Boardman attended the fun day, as she has done for many years.
“I’ve been coming to this for years, ever since it started,” she said. “It’s just a nice get-together with a lot of people you might not see on a regular basis.”
Anderson was asked which activities she was looking forward to the most.
“A little bingo. Lunch is always good,” she said.
