Youngstown Christian School is holding a memorial golf outing Friday at Avalon Lakes at Squaw Creek in Vienna to raise money for the family of Anthony Harris Jr., the former Eagles football player who drowned recently.

The school plans to donate proceeds toward the funeral of Harris Jr. and his father, Anthony Harris Sr.

Since the family had no life insurance, the remaining money raised will go toward taking care of them.

“Anthony was one of our really good student-athletes and was a good young man in our community,” said Greg Finnegan, the school’s assistant athletic director.

“We just got approval from the school board and this is our way of taking care of him the best way we can.”

Harris Jr., 21, and his father, 48, went fishing on a pond off Miller Graber Road, just east of Newton Falls, the morning of July 12 and didn’t return.

The body of Harris Sr. was discovered the next night and Harris Jr. the morning after.

Finnegan said the school is planning to create a scholarship in the name of the younger Harris.

“We don’t want people in the community to forget what kind of person he was,” Finnegan said.

“That’s our long-term plan, but the golf outing is our way of taking care of the family now.”
