Scrappers’ streak snapped at 5 games

Staff report

STATE COLLEGE, PA.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers wasted a quality start from Sean Brady and saw their five-game winning streak snapped by the State College Spikes on Wednesday night.

Brady worked five scoreless innings, but the Spikes rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Scrappers, 5-3, in New York-Penn League play at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The Scrappers (16-23) scored all their runs in the top of the second inning. Taylor Murphy hit his third home run, a two-run shot, and Yonathan Mendoza added a solo shot to stake Brady to a 3-0 lead.

Brady, a left-hander, kept the Spikes (27-12) scoreless on two hits through five innings. He walked three and struck out three.

State College cut its deficit to a run, 3-2, with two in the sixth off reliever Ramon Rodriguez. Alex DeLeon supplied one of those runs with his sixth homer. The other scored after an error, a double and a wild pitch.

Brian O’Keefe doubled in a run and Ronnierd Garcia had a two-run single in the Spikes’ three-run eighth.

The Scrappers open a three-game series at Williamsport at 7:05 tonight.
