Woman arrested

YOUNGSTOWN

Police arrested a woman on a theft warrant Monday afternoon just as she was trying to get tickets to take a bus back to her hometown of Worcester, Mass., reports said.

Kristin M. Marando, 21, also had charges of possession of drug abuse instruments and possession of drug paraphernalia added to her theft charge because officers found a syringe and a burnt spoon on her when she was arrested.

Police found her about 5:10 p.m. at the Western Reserve Transit Authority station at 340 W. Federal St., reports said.

Business robbed

WARREN

A worker at Quik Cash, 1602 Parkman Road NW, was robbed of about $16,000 in cash from the safe Monday.

The employee said she was just opening the business for the day at 9 a.m. when a male came through the front door and ordered her to give him the money in the safe.

She opened the safe, and the suspect took two bags of cash, pushing her to the floor as he left.

The suspect is in his 30s, about 6 feet tall with a large build and was wearing dark clothing and a black hat.

Man reports assault

WARREN

A 52-year-old Champion man reported being hit in the head and knocked unconscious at Packard Park at 9 p.m. Monday during an altercation with a known man while watching a baseball game.

The man said he was unconscious for several hours, then walked to a nursing home on Mahoning Avenue, where police were called.

A police officer interviewed him at St. Joseph Health Center, where he was being treated for a large, bloody wound on his forehead.

The victim said he didn’t know what type of weapon caused the wound. The victim was “unable to tell me what the argument was about,” the officer reported.

Celebration planned

YOUNGSTOWN

Tabernacle Baptist Church, 707 Arlington St., will have a celebration finale of its Children’s Defense Fund Summer Freedom School Program from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday.

The event will highlight the program’s student scholars and accomplishments achieved during their enrollment in the nationally acclaimed literacy-based summer enrichment program.

Scholars will receive books to start their own library. Refreshments will be served. Reservations can be made by contacting Tabernacle at 330-747-9624, and ask for Lois Thornton, program director, or Allan Irizarry-Graves, site coordinator.

Local women will split lottery winnings

YOUNGSTOWN

Two Youngstown women will split $394,500 after having one of the two winning tickets sold in a July 18 Ohio Lottery drawing.

Beating the 1-575,757 odds in the $789,000 Rolling Cash 5 game were Ruth Maro and Louise Redmond, according to an Ohio Lottery press release. The game rolled for 13 weeks.

After mandatory federal and state taxes totaling 29 percent, the women will split $280,095, with each receiving about $140,000. The store where the ticket was sold will receive a $500 agent sales bonus.

Man killed in crash

TWINSBURG

A 54-year-old Youngstown man died in a single-car accident on state Route 91 early Monday. Daniel Farah was the car’s only occupant, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner. The accident occurred about 12:41 a.m. in the 9700 block of the interstate.

‘Producers’ in Salem

The musical-comedy “The Producers” hits the Salem Community Theatre stage, 490 E. State St. Performances are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays from Aug. 1 through 10.
