Viewers can show support for Guthrie

Next week, Don Guthrie will celebrate 44 years of broadcasting from the WKBN television studios.

To honor its chief meteorologist, and to show support as he battles pancreatic cancer, WKBN is coordinating a Wear Purple for Don Day on Monday.

“Don is our longest-tenured employee and an iconic figure in Youngstown broadcasting, but more than that, he is just a great guy,” said Dave Coy, president and general manager of the station. “It’s very touching to know that he has such a connection with so many local viewers. What a fitting tribute and a great way for us all to show our support for Don.”

WKBN is asking the community to wear purple on Monday in support of Guthrie, because purple is the official color of pancreatic cancer. Wearing purple demonstrates to Guthrie that the community is standing with him.

“The outpouring of support for Don has been heartwarming,” said Mitch Davis, WKBN news director. “Viewers have sent hundreds of get-well cards, emails and care packages. That shows how many people Don and his forecasts have touched.”

Community members can submit photos of themselves or their group wearing purple by going to WKBN.com and clicking on “Report It.” They can also be shared by social media with the hashtag #Purple4Don. All photos will be shared with Guthrie.

Also Monday, during WKBN 27 First News at 6 p.m., there will be a special update on Guthrie’s ordeal and the First News team will break down the impact pancreatic cancer has on the Valley.
