Big ninth inning helps Scrappers rally

BOSTON
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally past the Lowell Spinners 6-1 in a New York-Penn League game on Sunday at Fenway Park.
The game was part of the Red Sox’ “Futures at Fenway” series.
Steven Patterson hit a bases-clearing double in the ninth for the Scrappers (10-20) and he also scored a run on Bradley Zimmer’s RBI double. Francisco Mejia added two hits, while Greg Allen, Taylor Murphy, Shane Rowland, Yonathan Mendoza and Ordomar Valdez also scored.
Luis Gomez (3-0) got the win, pitching two innings of shutout relief while allowing one hit, two walks and striking out three. Kieran Lovegrove started and gave up one run in 42/3 innings. He surrendered five hits, walked two and struck out two. Jordan Carter pitched the other 21/3 innings, giving up one hit with two walks and a strikeout.
James Shepherd (1-1) got the loss for the Spinners (12-18), giving up four runs on three hits, three walks and a strikeout.
Mahoning Valley plays Lowell today, then starts a homestand on Wednesday.
