Democratic judge hopefuls have week to notify party chairman

YOUNGSTOWN — Those interested in seeking the Mahoning County Democratic Party’s nomination on the Nov. 4 ballot to succeed Judge James C. Evans of common pleas court have until 5 p.m. next Friday to tell the party chairman.

The party’s precinct committee members, who will vote on the Democratic nominee, will meet sometime in early August to make that decision, said Chairman David Betras.

Those wanting to apply need to contact Betras by email at dbetras@bhlaws.com or by phone at 330-503-9696.

Judge Evans announced last month that he was retiring from the bench, effective Sept. 1.

The county Republican Party on Thursday submitted to Gov. John Kasich, a fellow Republican, the names of three candidates to replace Judge Evans on an interim basis.

The governor could appoint a replacement next month to immediately succeed Judge Evans after he retires.

Republicans also need to select their candidate for the Nov. 4 ballot no later than Sept. 10.
