Austintown library hosts Lego my Library event

Local libraries offer many activities to spark and enhance children’s creativity. One such event was Lego my Library at Austintown library on June 4.
Assistant supervisor of Austintown and Tri-Lakes libraries Starr Jones said the Lego my Library event will hopefully help children in school.
“We’re trying to do more of the STEAM programming [Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math],” she said. “Legos are really popular with the kids, and so we thought it would be a good way to get them in and to help them with their engineering and building skills. We have a lot of books on collecting Legos and making different structures with Legos and kind of tie in with that. The kids really enjoy doing it and it’s a good way not only for them to do just an art craft, but more of the science aspect of making things.”
Between four and 12 children were expected to attend. Lego events have also been hosted by the Main, Canfield and Poland library branches.
“All the kids really like them,” Jones said. “At Main we did a program called Lego Derby. We kind of took the aspect of Pinewood Derby like the Boys Scouts do, and we took so many wheels and parts and gave each kid that set and they made their vehicles. At the Main branch, there’s a ramp so they went down and had races to see which car was the fastest.”
One of the children who wanted to test his Lego-building skills was Isaiah Walter, a second-grader at Market Street Elementary.
“I really like Legos,” he said. “I have a thousand at home. I really like to make cars and that stuff.”
