Cleanup and power restoration moving forward in tornado area

CANFIELD

Clean-up and power restoration following a tornado that hit Canfield and Ellsworth Township Tuesday is well under way today, with fewer than 30 First Energy customers still without power and all roads cleared of fallen trees.

According to First Energy, the remaining customers without power can expect to have it restored by 4:30 p.m. today.

Some of the areas of Canfield most heavily affected by the twister were Blueberry Hill, Herbert Road, Williamsburg Drive and McCarty Drive, all of which had dozens of fallen trees and broken power lines.

In Ellsworth, the damage was confined to a monastery, a house, and a horse park on Akron-Canfield Road. A total of two houses in Canfield were significantly damaged, one on Raccoon Road and another on Jade Circle.

According to Dennis O’Hara, the director of the Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency, there was not enough structural damage to properties affected by the tornado to qualify for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

O’Hara cautioned people affected by the storm to be careful when hiring companies to assist in cleaning up.

“If there are any clean-up companies that come, make sure they are reputable companies,” O’Hara said. “There are disreputable companies out there ... You just have to be careful.”
