Timken engineer to give lecture

YOUNGSTOWN

Craig Seidelson, chief engineer for Timken Corp. in China, will lecture on “How ‘Made in China’ Became the World’s Most Recognized Brand” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Moser Hall at Youngstown State University.

The free public presentation, which will be in Schwebel Auditorium on the second floor of Moser Hall, is part of the YSU Industrial and Systems Engineering Lecture Series. Free parking is available in the F2 lot next to the Beeghly College of Education, between Rayen and Lincoln avenues.

Since 2000, the U.S. has lost 4 million manufacturing jobs and closed 40,000 factories. Today, only 1 in 10 U.S. jobs is in manufacturing, compared with 1 in 3 during the 1950s. At the same time, manufacturing jobs in China have exploded to the point where 75 percent of world’s factory jobs are in China.

During the lecture, Seidelson examines how China emerged to be the world’s single-largest producer of goods and what it means for U.S. manufacturers.

Tentative property values submitted

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning County Auditor’s Office has submitted tentative values for the county’s real estate to the Ohio Department of Tax Equalization for the triennial value update.

Based on real-estate sales data for the past three years, DTE, which will make a final decision in the next few weeks, is recommending no change in residential values and a 5 percent increase in agricultural values.

However, Mahoning County Auditor Michael V. Sciortino said he is asking for no change in agricultural real-estate values to protect the county’s farmers.

Any changes in values will be reflected in first-half 2015 real-estate-tax bills.

Reading techniques offered at library

Parents will be taught techniques for reading to their 3- and 4-year-old children, and children will enjoy a story during a free 6 p.m. program July 17 at the Austintown public library.

The “Imagine with Us” program is sponsored by the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and the United Way’s Dolly Parton Imagination Library initiative.
