Police: Man fired at newspaper carriers

Staff report

WARREN

Darren L. Lee, 27, of West Avenue Northwest, is being held in the Trumbull County jail without eligibility to make bond after police said he fired a handgun at two people delivering newspapers Thursday morning.

One of the shots went through the winter hat one of the carriers had placed on the dash board of their car.

The carriers were a 43-year-old Warren man and his daughter, age 18. They said they were in the 1700 block of West Avenue at 6:35 a.m., when they heard several gunshots.

They drove away and called police from nearby, finding a bullet hole in the windshield and one near the front passenger door.

Officers went to the location of the gunfire and saw neighbors yelling from their front doors that the person shooting had just run down Idylwild Street.

Officers noticed Lee running down Idylwild and ordered him to the ground, which he did without incident. Officers found a handgun in his front pocket and suspected crack cocaine and heroin in his possession.

They also found shell casings in front of the home where Lee lives at 1741 West Avenue.

He is charged with two counts of felonious assault, two counts of two counts of drug possession, and single counts of carrying a concealed weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
