Students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School dared the sun to come out for their annual Beach Day, and despite the cold air, it did shine to complete their celebration Jan. 17.

The students celebrated in the school’s cafeteria, which was decorated with beach balls and beach buckets hanging from the ceiling and where tables were cleared away and students spread beach towels to enjoy a picnic-style lunch.

The students are encouraged to dress in brightly-colored beachwear for the day. Many students took advantage of this opportunity by wearing Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts, Hawaiian leis, shorts, straw hats, sunglasses, swim trunks, sandals, visors and a variety of tropical flowers.

“Beach Day is a chance for the kids to beat the winter doldrums,” said Travis Lavery, C.H. Campbell Elementary School principal.

As a special Beach Day treat, the PTO provided popsicles for the children to enjoy after they had eaten lunch.

Following lunch, in lieu of outside recess, the students gathered in the gym for matches of beach ball volleyball and Dance Revolution, under the direction of physical education teacher Ronie Haurin.
