Traffic crash kills Lisbon man, 23

HANOVERTON

A 23-year-old Lisbon man was killed Wednesday morning when his vehicle traveled off state Route 172, struck a ditch and a tree in Hanover Township.

The Columbiana County Coroner’s office pronounced John W. Guappone dead at the scene. Guappone was traveling east on Route 172 at 12:41 a.m. when it went off the right edge of the road and onto the berm, according to the Lisbon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. It then traveled back across the road, striking a ditch and a tree.

The patrol continues to investigate.

North Side house destroyed by fire

YOUNGSTOWN

A North Side home was destroyed by a fire that started about 8:10 p.m. Tuesday. Crews were called to 361 Redondo Road and found heavy smoke and fire and could not get inside because of the flames, reports said.

The homeowner, Richard Henderson, told firefighters he had left about 6 p.m., and just before he left, he smelled something that seemed to be coming from the basement. Henderson said he disconnected several tools he was charging and checked his wood-burning stove before he left but found nothing out of the ordinary.

Two neighboring homes reported they had lost power briefly about 7:20 p.m., fire reports said. Damage is listed at $65,000. The cause is under investigation.

Courthouse restoration effort

The Mahoning County commissioners may award the architectural and engineering services contract for the historic restoration and preservation of the nearly 103-year-old county courthouse during their meeting at 10 a.m. today in the courthouse basement. An item on the agenda calls for a vote on whether to award the $510,000 contract to ms consultants inc. of Youngstown.

City man faces drug and traffic charges

A 29-year-old Youngstown man faces a drug-possession charge after city police stopped him for speeding and found suspected marijuana in his car. Shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday, police stopped Vincent Lebron, of Mahoning Avenue, on 12th Street. According to the report, officers noticed a strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside.

A search of the car revealed a marijuana cigarette in the ashtray. Police confiscated the cigarette, along with $95 that was in the glovebox.

Lebron is charged with possession of drugs, a first-degree misdemeanor, and cited for speeding. He was released on bond.
