Nurses to vote on tentative contract
YOUNGSTOWN
Registered nurses at Northside Medical Center are voting today on a tentative contract with the hospital.
The 390 RNs at Northside, represented by the Youngstown General Duty Nurses Association, have been working without a contract since their former work agreement with the hospital expired July 19, 2012.
Northside is an affiliate of ValleyCare Health System of Ohio, which also includes Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital in Howland.
Today’s voting is scheduled for 8 a.m., noon, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Teamsters Local 377 on Teamster Drive in Youngstown.
Eric Williams, YGDNA president, said no details about the tentative agreement would be available until after the vote.
Officials probe tractor-trailer fire
boardman
Boardman Fire Chief George Brown said the cause of the tractor-trailer fire that occurred Tuesday morning is still under investigation.
The fire broke out about 5:30 a.m. after the driver for R&J Trucking noticed his truck was riding strange and pulled over at the Giant Eagle parking lot on U.S. Route 224 in Boardman.
The driver was able to get out before the flames started.
The newer model truck ran on compressed natural gas, the chief said.
“We had to wait until a lot of the gas burned out until we could put it completely out,” Brown said.
Brown also said the “driver did the right thing” by pulling over into an open area.
Men enter home
WARREN
Two men who broke into a 69-year-old woman’s house in the 1600 block of Jackson Street Southwest on Monday afternoon made a puzzling remark to the woman, police say.
The men broke into the house through the front door, the woman said, and she saw them standing in the house near the front entrance.
Both men were wearing knit masks over their faces, but one of them took his off and told the woman to “call police,” according to a Warren police report. The man was white and about 5 feet 6 inches tall.
The woman ran and found her keys, which have a remote on them that activates a house alarm.
“When the suspects heard the alarm, they ran back out the front door,” the police report says.
Nothing was taken in the 12:45 p.m. break-in.
Both men were wearing dark clothing and left in a white van.
