Art show and sale to benefit YMCA

Staff report

BOARDMAN

FIVE Squared, a benefit art show and sale, will open Sunday at the Davis Family YMCA, 45 McClurg Road, and run through March 9.

More than 300 pieces of unframed 5-inch-by-5-inch artworks will be available for purchase at $25 each. Contributing artists hail from 10 states and nine countries, with the oldest a centenarian, and the most distant from Iran and China.

Many well-known local artists have donated art to this event.

Internationally acclaimed artist, activist and author Faith Ringgold contributed two signed pieces. Some of her major works are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. Ringgold is best known for her story quilts, which depict the history of black America. Her pieces will be sold at a silent auction.

The opening reception for FIVE Squared will be Sunday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. It will be the only opportunity to see the entire collection. Sales of the art will begin at 2:30 p.m. and will be taken off the wall when sold.

All proceeds will benefit the YMCA’s Arts and Humanities scholarship fund for underserved children and families in the Mahoning Valley.

This event is free and open to the community. For information, call the YMCA at 330-480-5656.
