TOLEDO

Two firefighters battling a blaze at an apartment complex near downtown Toledo were killed Sunday, city officials said.

Two firefighter fatalities were reported to the Lucas County coroner’s office Sunday, deputy coroner Dr. Maneesha Pandey told The (Toledo) Blade.

The fire department was expected to have a news conference Sunday night to release more details about the fatal blaze.

The firefighters were fighting the blaze about 3:30 p.m. in a six-unit apartment building on Magnolia Street near the Huron Market when they became disoriented, a battalion chief told WTOL-TV.

The firefighters were taken from the fire on stretchers to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, and a large crowd of Toledo Fire Department personnel gathered.

“Everyone is just numb right now,” Dan Desmond, vice president of Toledo Firefighters Local 92, told The Blade.
