YSU tennis team edges Bradley by 4-3 score

Peoria, Ill.

The Youngstown State men’s tennis team posted a 4-3 win over Bradley on Saturday. The match was tied at three following singles play, but YSU won two doubles matches to clinch the last point.

In singles play, YSU got wins from Max Schmerin, Zeeshan Ismail and Silviu Mistreanu. The Penguins (1-1) suffered two three-set losses in singles play.

In doubles play, YSU wins came from the teams of Sebastian Hagn and Dawould Kabli and Mistreanu and Schmerin.

Cross country champs at Curbstone luncheon

AUSTINTOWN

The guest speakers for the Curbstone Coaches luncheon Monday at noon at Lucianno’s Banquet Center will be the 2013 Division III state champion cross country team from McDonald with individual state champion Bobby Johnson and coach Chris Rupe. Also, Division I cross country state champion Mark Hadley from Boardman will be presented by the school’s athletic director Denise Gorski. The public is welcome.

Local athletes do well for Kent indoor team

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.

Area athletes placed in several events Friday and Saturday for the Kent State indoor track and field team competing in the Gladstein Invitational at Indiana University.

Miles Dunlap, a junior from McDonald, had the top time of 48.94 in the 400-meter dash invitational and also ran on the third-place 4-by-400 relay team along with freshman Andrew O’Leary from South Range.

Michael King, a junior from Salem, finished second in the shot put with a distance of 60-feet, 1.26-inches, and Marteze Roper, a senior from Warren Harding, ran on Kent’s 4-by-800 team which finished second.

Thome statue slated for August unveiling

CLEVELAND

When Jim Thome first started pointing his bat toward the pitcher, he never imagined that subtle movement would one day become immortalized. The Indians announced Saturday that they will unveil a statue of Thome at Progressive Field on Aug. 2. Cleveland’s career leader in home runs will be forever honored with the statue, which depicts him standing in the batter’s box and directing his bat toward the mound. Thome retired in 2012 with 612 career homers. One of Cleveland’s most popular players, he hit 337 homers with the Indians.

2 racers hospitalized after crash in Rolex 24

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.

Memo Gidley and Matteo Malucelli were admitted to a Daytona Beach hospital Saturday night for further testing following a two-car accident right before the three-hour mark of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. IMSA officials said both drivers were awake and communicating, but gave no other information about their conditions.

Gidley was driving for the pole-winning GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing team. He had to be cut out of the No. 99 Corvette, which crumpled like an accordion when he plowed into the back of Malucelli’s Ferrari.

Pacquiao-Bradley rematch set for April 12

NEW YORK

Nearly two years after Timothy Bradley defeated Manny Pacquiao in a disputed split decision, promoters announced Saturday the two will fight again on April 12. Pacquiao’s loss to Bradley on June 9, 2012, broke a 15-fight winning streak during which he was recognized as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world along with Floyd Mayweather.
