Butler Institute of American Art Area artists emerge

The Area Artists Annual, the region’s top art exhibition, will open Sunday at the Butler Institute of American Art and run through Feb. 23.

The popular exhibition, now in its 76th year, will be in the MacIntosh, Hynes-Finnegan and Davis Galleries, located on the second level of the museum at 524 Wick Ave.

Works by artists in all media who reside in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Mercer and Lawrence counties are included in the show.

The juror for the exhibition this year was Al Bright, retired professor of art history at Youngstown State University.

For this year’s competition, 216 works by 114 artists were entered. Bright selected 140 works from 102 artists for the show.

The winners of the top prizes are:

Best in Show: Christopher Duncan, Beloit.

First Prize: Gary Taneri, Warren.

Second Prize: Sean Butler, Canfield

Third Prize: William Danielson, Youngstown.

Juror’s Special Mentions: Susan Jacobs, Cortland; and Mark Scheuring, Salem.

Honorable Mentions: Jack Carlton, Girard; Richard Fisher, Leetonia; Carol Gallo, Girard; Heidi Garwig, Youngstown; Thomas Harwood, Niles; Raymond Herr, East Palestine; Patrick Hyland, Youngstown; Carl Leet, Hubbard; Ed Lockett, Youngstown; Jeffrey S. Piper, Youngstown; Aaron Powell, Youngstown; Daniel Shields, Canfield; Elizabeth Testa, Youngstown; and Joy White, Warren.
