A 46-year-old man at a home in the 900 block of Indiana Avenue shot himself Wednesday as police urged him to put down his gun.

Police went to the home at 3:15 p.m. after they received a call from someone inside the house who said shots were fired.

“Police arrived, and two officers went into the house,” said police Chief Lou Ronghi. “They were confronted by the man, who had a firearm. He was told to put the gun down, and he took his own life.”

Ronghi said there were two other family members in the house, and they were not hurt.

Police said they still are investigating what prompted the shooting.

They said they are still trying to sort out what led up to the suicide.

The Trumbull County coroner and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation are investigating, Ronghi said.

Ronghi said police responded quickly, which he believes prevented the situation from becoming worse.
