Intruders scared off

WARREN

A 67-year-old Burton Street Southeast woman reported that one black male and one white male kicked in her back door at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday while she was watching her four grandchildren. She yelled that an alarm was going off and police would be there soon, and the males ran back out through the back of the house. Nothing was taken.

Fireplace started blaze

CAMPBELL

Fire damaged a house Wednesday evening, breaking out at 7:48 p.m. at 468 Park Drive. No one was injured. Campbell fire Capt. Greg Rosile said the homeowner had a fire going in the fireplace, and a blaze started behind it. When firefighters got there, smoke was coming from the roof, he said. Firefighters were able to access the attic through the garage.

Damage was largely contained to the living room and garage, Rosile said. The family is staying elsewhere.

Police seize handgun

YOUNGSTOWN

Police seized a .22-caliber handgun about 7:50 p.m. Tuesday on the South Side after stopping a car for failing to stop at a stop sign. Two members of the vice squad on patrol pulled over a car driven by 33-year-old Montrell Gilbert of Youngstown at East Avondale Avenue and Market Street, and they noticed he was fidgeting with his hands when they talked to him, reports said. When officers took him out of the car they found the gun wedged between the driver’s seat and center console, reports said.

Gilbert was taken to the Mahoning County jail on the charges of carrying a concealed weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

A food distribution is set for 9 a.m. today at E.B. Family Life Center, 7 S. Garland Ave. Recipients should bring a bag and photo ID.

Armed robbery

YOUNGSTOWN

Police reports said a pair of armed men got away with cash from Jacobs Food Mart, 2047 Jacobs Road on the East Side about 5:35 p.m. Tuesday. An employee told police she was behind the counter when two men dressed in black, wearing masks over their faces, came in and pulled guns. One of the men went behind the counter and took cigarettes and cash and handed it to the other man, then they ran out of the store.

The employee told officers it appeared they left in a car driven by a third person.
