BREAKING NEWS | Mahoning commissioners will not put 0.25-percent sales tax on ballot

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County commissioners will not put a proposed 0.25 percent new sales tax on the ballot.

Commissioner Carol Rimedio-Righetti confirmed today that she and fellow commissioners along with other county officials decided to not put the new tax in front of voters during the May primary.

The money is still needed and the issue will be revisited with the possibility of putting it on the November election, she said.

The commissioners will continue to seek to have a 0.50 percent tax changed from a five-year renewal to a continuous tax, Rimedio-Righetti said.

During the next few months, county officials will conduct a couple of studies to show the money from a new tax is needed and perhaps conduct a couple of polls to gauge support for the tax, she said.

Rimedio-Righetti said the recent controversy over a 3 percent raise for county board of elections employees that was approved by that board and then put on hold had nothing do with the commissioners’ decision on postponing the new sales tax.
