Pa. state-owned universities seek flexible tuition

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A growing number of Pennsylvania’s state-owned universities are seeking flexibility to adjust tuition and fees in order to bolster student recruitment and cover expenses.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported today that the governing board of the State System of Higher Education is considering proposed pilot projects this week for several of the 14 campuses.

In the state’s northwestern corner, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania wants to reduce tuition for out-of-state students, which is currently 150 percent of the $6,600 in-state rate.

Edinboro officials say the out-of-state tuition of nearly $10,000 is $5,000 more than students from neighboring New York and Ohio would pay in their home states.

In the state’s southwestern corner, California University of Pennsylvania is proposing tuition reductions for active-duty military people who enroll online.
