Mahoning County health official reminds all how to dress for frigid temps

AUSTINTOWN — The Mahoning County Public Health Department today warned residents about the risk of hypothermia and frostbite during the unusually cold temperatures forecast for this week and beyond.

Hypothermia is a condition in which the body’s core temperature drops below that required for normal metabolism and body functions.

Also, hyperthermia or heat stroke can be a danger in frigid temperatures for babies whose parents over-bundle them. Babies cannot get rid of the heat, said Dr. John Venglarcik III, county health department medical director.

Hyperthermia is elevated body temperature that occurs when a body produces or absorbs more heat than it dissipates.
