Liberty trustees to discuss road tax

LIBERTY

The Liberty trustees will discuss asking voters for a new road tax in May, though the tax was defeated in November.

Township Administrator Pat Ungaro said he talked individually with two of the three trustees Monday, and they decided to have a special meeting to discuss placing a 1.25-mill 5-year levy on the ballot.

The meeting was to take place at 11 a.m. today at the administration building.

Ungaro said trustees might vote on the issue.

After trustees campaigned to get township residents behind a new tax, voters defeated it 1,255 to 983 during the November general election.

Township officials had hopes that the revenue generated by the levy, $226,320 a year, could be used as a township contribution, or match money, to attract state grants for roadwork.

Ungaro said then that he possibly could obtain grants without match money, but it would not be as easy to do so.

Ungaro said talk of a new effort to pass a road tax is prompted by a lot of new complaints the township is getting about roads in poor condition.
