1908: New York City’s Board of Aldermen passes an ordinance prohibiting women from smoking in public (the measure was vetoed two weeks later by Mayor George B. McClellan Jr.).

1968: The Battle of Khe Sanh begins during the Vietnam War.

1977: President Jimmy Carter pardons almost all Vietnam War draft evaders.

1989: Fifty-two Youngstown city schools jobs, including those of two dozen teachers, are slated for elimination under a plan to solve the district’s financial problems.

Two accidents on Mahoning County roads claim four lives, the first traffic fatalities of the year in the county.

1974: A defective boiler explodes at the New Bedford Elementary School on a Sunday evening, blowing a hole in the wall and causing cancellation of classes the next day.

A high-speed chase starts in Trumbull County at Routes 46 and 82 and leads onto Interstate 80 before ending in Pennsylvania where the stolen car crashes near Emlenton. State police arrest the suspected driver.

Two young Youngstown men, Jeffrey Louis Lyford, 20, and Brion Byers, 18, are killed when their car skids in West Virginia Route 2 near New Cumberland, W. Va., and crashes into a lumberyard garage. Byers, a graduate of Ursuline, was one of the first men hired by the Ohio Bell Telephone Co. as an operator.

A survey of unemployment in several Youngstown neighborhoods will be conducted in an effort to obtain job funding under the federal Comprehensive Employment and Training Act of 1973.

1964: Eight grand jury witnesses who refused to testify about local gambling and rackets are cited for contempt of court by Judge Sidney M. Rigelhaupt. Among them are brothers Orland and Charles Carabbia and Dominic Senzarino, all of Struthers.

Dr. J. Harry Wanamaker, superintendent of Youngstown schools, is one of a group of educators from eight Ohio cities who present some education problems before Gov. James A. Rhodes during a meeting in Columbus.

1939: Andrew Marino is elected president of the Youngstown Automobile Association, and Ray Smith is elected vice president.
