LISBON

Three people were killed in an accident about 10:55 a.m. Sunday on state Route 518 in Wayne Township.

A news release from the Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said a Jeep Cherokee driven by 31-year-old Rachel K. Lindesmith of Hanoverton was driving east on state Route 518 when it went left of center and collided with a Chevrolet Equinox driven by 39-year-old James D. Nign of East Liverpool.

Killed was Nign, his wife, Meghann, 27, who was the front-seat passenger, and 11-year-old Addisyn Benzel of Minerva, who was a passenger in the rear cargo area and was ejected from the Equinox.

Lindesmith was wearing a seat belt, and her 9-month-old son, Austin, was restrained in a child safety seat. Austin was taken to Salem Regional Medical Center with injuries not deemed to be life threatening, while his mother is being treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Six other passengers in the Equinox also were taken to area hospitals. They are:

McKenna M. Nign, 11, who was in the rear cargo area where are there are no restraints. She was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital.

McKayla E. Howard, 11, who was also in the rear cargo area. She was taken to Aultman Hospital in Canton.

Taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh by helicopter were:

Savanah D. Nign, 6, who was in the lap of Meghann Nign.

Chase D. Nign, 4, was in the back seat in a child safety seat.

Brody B. Nign, 1, was in the back seat in a child safety seat.

Payslee R. Nign, 9 months, was in the back seat in a child seat.

The patrol is still investigating, and the release did not issue a cause for the accident.
