Red Cross has blood drive at library branch

The meeting room of the Boardman library was turned over to the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross Dec. 26 for a blood drive. The meeting room was set up with private cubicles for workers to take patient histories, an area for blood donation and a snack station.
Those donating were given information to read on giving blood, then patiently waited their turn to donate.
Ellen Nelson, of Poland, came along with her father, Tim Nelson, also of Poland, to donate. Ellen has donated in the past. It helps people, she said.
Tim has donated regularly. It was easier, he noted, when the drives were offered at his place of employment.
“I’ve done it for a long time, just trying to help out,” he said.
He still donates when he has the opportunity, however.
“I have the day off today,” he said.
After donating, participants were given a snack and drink.
Donors need to eat so they don’t pass out after donating, noted Tina Liu, a Red Cross volunteer. Liu, a college student, volunteers when she’s on break from school.
“I think it’s a good cause,” she said. “I think people need to donate more blood.”
