Boardman senior Mark Hadley has been named the Gatorade Ohio cross country runner of the year. A three-time first team all-state selection, Hadley won the Division I individual state championship in the fall with a time of 15:21.37. He also placed 18th in the Foot Locker Midwest Regional championships.

Hadley has maintained a 4.0 GPA and is ranked first in his graduating class. He has verbally committed to Furman.

Harlem Globetrotters returning to Covelli

The Harlem Globetrotters will return to the Covelli Centre at 7 p.m. on Jan. 29 as part of the Globetrotters’ 88th consecutive season of touring the world.

Williams sets record with 3rd-round win

Five-time champion Serena Williams has now won more matches at the Australian Open than any other woman, notching career win No. 61 on Friday as she advanced to the fourth round with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Daniela Hantuchova. She has only dropped 12 games in three straight-set wins this week.

The temperature hit 39 Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) during Williams’ match and was expected to climb to 44 C (111 F) later Friday, with match suspensions a possibility on outer courts for the second consecutive day.

Price gets $14M deal ahead of arbitration

Tampa Bay left-hander David Price got a big deal Thursday, a $14 million, one-year contract. Price, the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner, agreed to the biggest single-season salary in Rays history.

New Oakland closer Jim Johnson, acquired from Baltimore last month, agreed to a $10 million, one-year deal with the Athletics, who also struck a $2.3 million deal with catcher John Jaso. Others who agreed Thursday included Philadelphia right-hander Kyle Kendrick ($7,675,000), Mets first baseman Ike Davis ($3.5 million), Colorado right-hander Wilton Lopez ($2.2 million), Cincinnati outfielder Chris Heisey ($1.76 million) and Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli ($700,000).

Among free agents, catcher John Buck finalized a $1 million contract with Seattle on Thursday. Cleveland gave a minor league deal to outfielder Nyjer Morgan, who played in Japan last year. Brad Penny and Guillermo Mota agreed to minor league contracts with Kansas City.

Rondo ready to return ‘barring setback’

Rajon Rondo’s rehab continues. And now it will take place in live NBA games.

The Boston Celtics’ point guard, who has not played since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last Jan. 25, is scheduled to return on Friday night. Coach Brad Stevens and general manager Danny Ainge both said Rondo would return for the game against the Los Angeles Lakers “barring any setbacks.”
