YOUNGSTOWN

The city’s board of control awarded grants to three businesses that are expanding and to the local Meals on Wheels program, which is relocating.

The board voted Thursday to provide up to $23,804 to Meals on Wheels to help with its $119,021 relocation from John Knox Presbyterian Church at 1806 Market St. to Calvary Towers, a retirement-housing facility nearby at 1840 Market St.

“They provide an important service to those in the city,” said T. Sharon Woodberry, the city’s economic development director.

The board also voted to give money to three companies:

Ryes the Bar, 124 W. Federal St., will get up to $14,500 to help pay a portion of its exterior improvements, including signs and the installation of a balcony, a fire escape and a door.

The total cost of the downtown craft beer and high-end whiskey bar is about $300,000.

It is on the second floor of the West Federal Street building, above the Imbibe martini bar.

One Hot Cookie, on the ground floor of Erie Terminal Place at 112 W. Commerce St., will receive up to $2,731 to assist the company with the expansion of its current business and the purchase of additional equipment. The project’s cost is estimated at $13,655.

The company is expanding next month to the Austintown branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

The city grant is specifically for work at the Youngstown business, Woodberry said.

“We’re assisting the renaissance of downtown, and it’s a relatively small contribution,” said city Finance Director David Bozanich, the board of control’s secretary.

Kiraly Tool & Die Inc., 1250 Crescent St., will get up to $8,042 toward an $80,427 expansion that also includes the purchase of equipment.

The company has 12 employees and plans to add two more in the next two years.
