Salem Rotary Foundation begins year with change

On Jan. 7, the trustees of the Salem Rotary Foundation met and reorganized. Trustees are George W.S. Hays, Shelby Mingus, Frank A. Zamarelli Jr., Alma Apicella, Mark C. Flake IV, Dr. Peter Apicella and Atty. Geoffrey S. Goll.

Returning for three-year terms are Goll and Mingus. The following were elected to serve the foundation for the 2014-15 year: Hays, president; Mingus, vice president; Zamarelli Jr., treasurer; and Goll, secretary.

Last year, the foundation gave gifts to Help Hotline Crisis Center, Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and United Way Services of Northern Columbiana County. It also sponsored three high school students for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award Seminar.

The foundation received gifts in memory of Carolyn Cleveland, Norman G. Weingart, Polly W. Kendall, Paul L. Mollenkopf, Marion K. Apple and Lois Hickey Peters. It also received financial donations in honor of Mary Winch-Korff and Goll.

At the Salem Community Center Memorial Walkway, bricks will be installed to honor Kendall; Robert S. McCullough Jr., past president; Richard Jones, past president; and Ruth A. Abbuhl.

Alexandra Apicella, Taylor Zamarelli and Lucia Fraser were inducted into the Bryce W. Kendall Society of the foundation because of their help in furthering its goals.

The foundation’s assets have increased to more than $239,000, which supports the foundation’s commitment to the community as well as worldwide needs. The foundation’s purpose is to promote and foster the ideals of Rotary International and provide charitable gifts to those who practice the ideals.
