A former corrections officer accused of assaulting an inmate has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to a civil rights violation.

Marlon Taylor, 47, of Vermilion, was sentenced Tuesday in federal court on one count of deprivation of rights under color of law.

Federal prosecutors and investigators say Taylor repeatedly struck and injured an inmate in July 2012 while working in the Lorain County Jail. Authorities say that violated the right of the unidentified inmate to be free from cruel and unusual punishment.

The maximum possible sentence was 10 years. Taylor’s attorney, Jack Bradley, says sentencing guidelines called for 12 to 18 months.
