YSU art faculty exhibit nears

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

“Uncharted,” an art faculty show at Youngstown State University, will open Jan. 23 with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m., and run through March 7 at the McDonough Museum of Modern Art.

Titled “Uncharted,” the show features the work of new faculty members Claudia Berlinski, Missy McCormick and RJ Thompson. It reflects new vision but also re-investigates familiar practices in art and design.

Berlinski is drawn to vernacular photography, and most recently to the change in how we create snapshots since the inception of cellphone photography. Her current body of work is steeped in a personal, and seemingly global, obsession to record things visually.

McCormick’s current work revolves around the many ways we assess the passing of time and our relationship and reaction to time. Her forms often pull from things that have been in her everyday surroundings at different times in her life.

The core focus of Thompson’s design work is rooted in professional practice. Be it print design or web design, all of his works are designed in and for professional scenarios.

Several of the participating artists will be doing talks throughout the run of the exhibition.

The schedule includes:

Robert Raack, 3 p.m. Feb. 5; Berlinski and Chris McCullough, noon Feb. 6; Thompson, 11 a.m. Feb. 12; McCormick and Stephen Chalmers, 5 p.m. Feb. 19; Dana Sperry, Joseph D’Uva and Joy Christiansen Erb, 11 a.m. Feb. 25; and Dragana Crnjak, 3 p.m. Feb. 26.

The museum, 525 Wick Ave., is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 330-941-1400 or go to mcdonoughmuseum.ysu.edu.
