Which hand? Participants hid a treat in one hand and had their dogs guess which by sniffing, pawing or licking.
High five: Dogs were taught to use a front paw to make contact with their companions’ hands held about 3 feet high.
Shake hands: People hid treats in their hands and encouraged the dogs to touch their hands by saying “Shake.”
Take a bow: Treats were held at the dogs’ nose height and moved toward their rear paws to get the animals to bend their elbows and touch the floor.
Spin left or right: Treats were moved in a circle toward the dogs’ hind legs and around so the animals would complete a circle.
Food on your nose: Treats were held near and on the dogs’ noses for one second and, with a “wait” command, they were to focus on the treats.
Treat on your feet: Cookies were placed on one of the animals’ paws and praise was given if the dogs did not touch the treats.
Bang: Participants pointed their fingers like a pistol after saying “Bang,” then moved the treats above their dogs’ heads to get the pets to lie on their sides or roll onto their backs.
