Comedian April Macie knows what boys like
By John Benson
The road to comedian April Macie’s heart sounds a lot like the same path to a man’s heart: booze and bacon.
“I definitely partake in the booze and bacon, but when you hit 30, your eyes get puffy,” said Macie, calling from Los Angeles. “That’s when I have to put something weird like a cold spoon on my eye to get it de-puffed by show time.”
Show time for Macie this weekend takes place Friday and Saturday at the Funny Farm in Austintown. This marks the Youngstown debut for the funny woman who takes talking about sex to new heights.
In fact, this Easton, Pa., native has parlayed her promiscuous talk into a busy career on the comedy-club circuit.
Not only was Macie a 2006 finalist on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” but she’s a “Bob & Tom” regular. Also, in 2008 she was voted the “Funniest and Hottest” comedian in America on the Howard Stern show. That’s quite a resume, but it gets better, er, dirtier.
“You know, I get recognized a lot from Snoop Dogg’s ‘The Bad Girls of Comedy,’” Macie said. “I think it’s because I was the token white broad. Then there are people who aren’t embarrassed to admit they saw me on the AVN porn awards. There’s always a bit of hesitation before they tell me they saw me hosting. They always check behind them to make sure their wife didn’t hear they were watching the porn awards.”
A working comedian for over a decade, Macie said she grew up inspired by Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Richard Pryor and Wanda Sykes. As for her set, it’s broken down into thirds — there’s sex, relationships and men.
“It really confuses me why in America sex is labeled as dirty,” Macie said. “Americans are very puritanical and they attach this weird element of shame to something that everybody does. I don’t really talk about people’s religion or politics. I feel it’s up to people to make their own choices. So I just talk about sex.”
Then there’s her family, which she describes as crazy and being a “bottomless pit of material.” Her dad eats White Castle nonstop while her mom is a drinker.
“She likes to throw back a 30-pack of Keystone Light and paint pictures of Michael Bolton in the basement,” Macie said. “My whole family is wacky. Like I have an uncle who was arrested for DUI by a bicycle cop.”
Up next for Macie is an appearance on Dave Attell’s new late night Comedy Central show talking about, well, sex. Considering Macie’s frequent topic, does this mean she’s constantly getting hit on?
“No, I rarely get hit on after shows,” Macie said. “I think after some lady just talks about sex and her wacky family, it’s not as appealing as you think it would be.”
So what if a dude stood in the back of the Funny Farm with a package of bacon and some booze?
Macie laughed, “Well, that’s my guy.”
