As the first 2014 polar vortex dipped down into the Mahoning Valley this past week, it gave local anglers a chance to again get out the ice augers and fish in area lakes that had at least 5 inches of solid ice.
Mosquito Lake, Pymatuning Reservoir, Lake Milton and Lake Berlin have had reports of walleye, crappie and blue gill being taken with anglers trying their best to catch some fish before the ice-fishing season could be cut short by warming temperatures and rain.
Barry Rose of Canfield was glad he was able to get away “from cabin fever” even though the fish weren’t biting as much as he liked. Rose says he enjoys the challenge of ice fishing and his quiet time on the lake.
Bob Edwards of Minerva watched his Vexilar fish scout as he changed his bait again. “The fish are there, but they just aren’t interested,” he said.
Both men, however, agreed with a lyric from a song by county singer Billy Currington: “A bad day of fishin’ beats a good day of anything else.”
