Fitch’s Figueroa commits to LSU

Fitch senior thrower Gabby Figueroa has verbally committed to LSU.
Figueroa, a two-time indoor state champion in the weight throw, chose the Tigers over offers from Michigan, Iowa, Texas-San Antonio, Kent State and Ashland.
Figueroa holds Ohio’s state indoor meet record in the weight throw (56 feet) and was also a state qualifier in both the shot put and discus at last year’s outdoor state meet.
Curbstone Coaches to add 14 to Hall of Fame

The 47th Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame banquet is scheduled May 4 with 14 new members set to be enshrined during ceremonies at Mr. Anthony’s banquet center. Pat Narduzzi, former Ursuline High School, YSU and Rhode Island football star, and current defensive coordinator of Rose Bowl champion Michigan State University, will serve as guest speaker.
The 2014 class includes Dan Birmingham (boxing), Dorothy (Bowers) Collins (basketball), Don Brunetti (football), Bud Frazier (track and field), Nick Gavolas (swimming/diving), Dan Guerrieri (bowling), Dennis Krancevich (baseball), Ron Lynn (football), Carol Pennington (bowling), Jim Pepperney (special award), Richard Skelton (bowling), Robert Winterburn (football), Jackie (Bak) Yost (swimming/diving) and Dan Zarlingo (basketball/football).

Stephen F. Austin hires Kubik as OC
NACOGDOCHES, Texas
Cardinal Mooney High graduate Matt Kubik was hired as the offensive coordinator at Stephen F. Austin.
Kubik, who played collegiately at Louisiana Tech, spent the last three seasons as the wide receivers coach at Central Arkansas, where he coached under new SFA coach Clint Conque.

Mill Creek golf professional Dennis Miller will be the guest speaker Monday at the weekly Curbstone Coaches luncheon. The event gegins at noon Luciano’s Caf in Austintown. The public is welcome.
Strasburg agrees to one-year deal
WASHINGTON
Stephen Strasburg has agreed to a one-year, $3,975,000 deal with the Washington Nationals.
Strasburg avoided arbitration by agreeing to the contract.
This would have been the first season Strasburg was eligible for arbitration. The 25-year-old right-hander is 29-19 over four seasons, including 8-9 last year with a 3.00 ERA in 30 starts.
