Poland Union Elementary School PTO recently made a donation to the Poland Schools Foundation. Ted Roberts, president of the Poland Schools Foundation, along with Poland Local Schools Superintendent David Janofa and Union Elementary Principal Mike Masucci accepted the donation from PTO President Kim Brant and PTO Treasurer Jacey Henderson.

“The Poland Schools Foundation is a non-profit organization which is separate from the school district. It assists teachers and students to provide educational equipment when the school budget falls short. It fills in the gaps. The foundation offers mini-grants for classrooms to receive what they need,” said Masucci.

Michelle Landers, a fourth-grade teacher at Union, takes advantage of the grants every year and this year she was awarded a grant to purchase an electrical supply set to help the students learn about electricity.

“I look for this every year. I wait for the application forms to come out and I fill them out right away. Anything I can do to enhance my teaching, I will do,” Landers said.

Due to the new content statements from the state, Landers needed to include electricity in her curriculum. She applied for a grant from the Poland Schools Foundation to purchase an electrical supply kit so the students could perform experiments and receive hands-on learning experiences.

“This donation is a nice gesture from the PTO. They raised the money and donated it back. The money will be put to good use and will go back to the schools. It will go directly to the teachers and students in the classrooms,” Masucci said.
