Applications for Homestead Exemption underway in Mahoning County

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

Senior citizens and permanently disabled people of any age who own and occupy their homes may apply for homestead property-tax reductions from now through June 2 through the Mahoning County Auditor’s Office.

People who were 65 or older or permanently disabled in calendar year 2013 still may apply and will not be subject to an income-eligibility ceiling.

New applicants reaching age 65 this year, however, will qualify for the reduction only if the combined adjusted gross income for themselves and their spouses on their Ohio income-tax return did not exceed $30,500 in 2013.

The new income-eligibility ceiling was imposed by the Ohio Legislature in House Bill 59.

Auditor Michael V . Sciortino urges people with questions to call his office at 330-740-2010.
