Illinois peacock escapes pen, freezes to death
DUNDEE, Ill.
An adventurous peacock that escaped its pen at a Chicago-area petting zoo and became frozen in subzero temperatures has died.
The Randall Oaks Barnyard Zoo in Dundee says the 5-year-old bird named Blue died Wednesday morning, a day after firefighters rescued the bird from a tree branch about 40 feet from the ground. The temperature outside was 12 degrees below zero.
Brian Mangiaracina is Randall Oaks’ park and division manager. He says firefighters and zoo staff plucked Blue from a pine tree about 90 minutes after the bird fled his heated enclosure.
The zoo used warm water and a sweatshirt to restore Blue’s circulation. Mangiaracina says Blue likely died because of a buildup of fluid in his lungs from the cold.
Dundee is about 35 miles northwest of Chicago.
W. Pa. pizza shop delivers medicines during freeze
LIGONIER, Pa.
A western Pennsylvania pizza shop has been delivering prescription medicines and other supplies to ill and elderly residents so they don’t have to go outside during recent frigid weather.
Tom Wynkoop, the owner of Fox’s Pizza Den in Ligoner, tells WPXI-TV that he tweeted his offer because his community about 45 miles east of Pittsburgh has a lot of elderly residents.
Wynkoop told those in need to call his cellphone to arrange deliveries of prescription medicines and other products — no strings attached. That’s right, folks don’t have to order a pizza or anything else from Wynkoop’s shop to get help.
Wynkoop says his shop has made four such deliveries and adds, “You have to be there for your residents.”
The region was hit with record-low, sub-zero temperatures Tuesday. Temperatures were merely sub-freezing by Wednesday.
Detroit-area barber looks to set quick-cut mark
DETROIT
A Michigan barber is hoping to find his way into the record books with some quick work.
Bryan (B-Dogg) Price wants to set a Guinness World Records mark for completing the most male haircuts in an hour. The Detroit Free Press reports Price needs to complete 35 haircuts, but he says his personal goal is 40.
The 46-year-old from Oak Park is planning the record attempt April 6 at Michigan Barber School on Detroit’s west side, where he got his barber’s license in 1988.
Price plans to use two cordless clippers at the same time and move back and forth between the two chairs. The cuts will be recorded on video.
Ivan Zoot, who holds the record at 34 haircuts, says he wishes Price good luck in his attempt.
