With Pa. temp rising, focus turns to water pipes

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Temperatures remained well below freezing in Pennsylvania, a day after a blast of arctic air set records by driving temperatures well below zero in Pittsburgh and much of the western and northern part of the state.

Things slowly returned to normal as schools which canceled classes on Tuesday reopened today — though many with two-hour delays. Pittsburgh Public Schools planned to reopen two hours late, but issued a statement before dawn that classes would be canceled again as temperatures remained in the single digits.

Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority and other similar agencies scrambled to repair water mains that ruptured due to the deep freeze, and plumbers and heating repair companies were reportedly overwhelmed with calls to fix burst pipes and furnaces that failed during the cold snap.
